What is so wrong with being silly?

My 3 year old daughter loves the fact that I'm silly. So do my friends, family, aquaintances, co-workers and clients. I think it's why people feel comfortable around me quickly.

So WHY does our society impress on children and adults a like that when they grow up you can no longer be silly? Why is it more acceptable to be "nose to the grindstone" and grim? Do they think that being silly equals being lazy. I think not! I've been silly my whole life, but yet I have an advanced degree, a career, own my own home, etc. There are plenty of people who enjoy a good laugh, practical joke, etc. who are responsible people.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, a famous french war hero and heralded author wrote a wonderful book called "The Little Prince" in 1943. In this book he makes some profound and idealistic points about life and human nature, including the fact that while you may become an adult, you don't have to become a "grown-up". In one of his most famous lines, he states: "You can see clearly only with your heart. What is truly important is invisible to the eyes". You can make the choice to see the world through the eyes of a child or not.

Some may say that our society would crumble if everyone saw the world this way, but ya have to ask yourself, how many wars to children start?

Just a thought from a silly mom.
